Seasonal change
Did you know that the seasons can have an impact on your hearing?
Not only can changes in the weather and seasonal noises such as fireworks and crowded shopping areas have an impact, but during the colder months, our hearing can also deteriorate due to many environmental factors.
So it’s important we look after our ears.
Keep Your Ears Warm
Persistent exposure to cold weather can cause numerous ear problems. Bony spurs in our ear canal, exostosis, or ‘surfer’s ear’ which constricts the ear canal, making it difficult to drain water, ear wax, and dirt. This, in turn, can lead to ear infections and even permanent hearing loss.
Keeping your ears warm by wearing a hat, earmuffs, or a scarf can help prevent these types of problems.
Keep Your Ears Dry
When coming in from the rain and cold, making sure your ears are dry will help protect against any bacterial infections and help you avoid sore, cracked skin due to the changes in moisture.
Keep Your Ears Clean
The cold and windy weather can make your ears produce more wax, which can build up further if you use cotton buds to clean them, so never use them.
Use a tissue or damp cloth to clean the outer portion of your ear. If in doubt, remember the old saying: “you shouldn’t put anything smaller than your elbow in your ear”.
If you feel you need a more thorough ear wax removal treatment, get in touch with us here at Discretion Hearing. We will examine your ears and can offer micro-suction ear wax removal if necessary.
Look after your Hearing Aids
Hearing aids don’t always do very well in the cold.
Very cold temperatures can shorten your hearing aids’ battery life. And coming in from the cold to a warm house can cause moisture to build up in your hearing aids from condensation.
You can help keep your hearing aids warm and dry with earmuffs or a hat. Give your hearing aids a quick inspection and dry them if needed. You can even buy specialist hearing aid dryers to help.
Book Your Hearing Test
At the very least, you should schedule an appointment with Discretion Hearing annually so we can check that your hearing is in the best condition possible. We will perform a hearing test to determine any hearing problems, talk you through your options and recommend suitable treatment.
Get in touch with us today to organise your hearing examination. If you can’t get to our Southport Clinic then we can organise a home visit for you, meaning you’ll still receive the same fantastic service that we are renowned for.
